UMW Corner
Welcome to our Byron United Methodist Women web page and thank you for reading about us today.
| We have two circles in our unit of 53 active women with five on the
inactive list that support us with their prayers and finances. The Annie Peavy Circle meets the first Monday night of every month at 7:00 PM in the UMW room of the Christian Fellowship Center. Leader: Kay Howell, 956-4402 or email kay.howell@hcahealthcare.com. Monthly programs are varied as members select and present topics that are important to them.. The Sunshine Circle meets the third Wednesday of the month (Sept - May) at 10:00 AM in the church conference room of the administrative building. The leader is Lillian Williams: 956-2588 or email lillianbwilliams@windstream.net. Along with more personal devotions, the programs are selected from the UMW program book. All circles use the UMW Prayer Calendar keeping our hearts open to our commitment of worldwide missions. Visit the circle that best suits your time or interest. It's worth your time, and we would love to have you join us! There are times when the meetings of the different circles conflict with holidays. To avoid this we will change our day to the following week at the same time. (The church office is located next door to the sanctuary in a house - there is a sign on the lawn announcing the office) |
The purpose of the United Methodist Women is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ, to develop a creative supportive fellowship and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
In 1923 Miss Annie Peavy, a member of this church, was chosen to go to Japan sailing on August 13, 1923. Our evening circle is named after her, as we carry on her work for the Lord.
The Byron Missionary Society was organized in 1891 by seven women of this church. The memory of the purpose held forth by those seven ladies who met together years ago stands as a reminder that "all the past and all the future may be found in the present." The women who now make up our unit have before them a challenge to maintain the same strength of purpose. The United Methodist Women (so renamed on March 2, 1972) have become one million strong across the world, because in joining forces we can help God's people to move forward and upward into a way of life God has intended for all of his children to live.
Although we have many activities going on throughout the church and we help with many of these, our main purpose is to do work with missions both locally and world wide. To help our fellow persons that are near and dear to us is such a blessing.
There have been many projects over the years and I will mention only a few so that you will have an idea of what we are about. Sweaters have been collected and sent to third world countries, lap quilts made for patients at Fort Valley Nursing Home, quilts for the United Methodist Children's home, bibs made for a local nursing home, toilet items collected to help B.U.S.T., (Byron United Serving Together) a local agency, food source to help those in the community, vegetable seeds collected for missions, prayer chain formed and carried on to this day, to lift up those who are hurting or sick. Some of us help the Red Cross as registered volunteers during a neighborhood blood drive. We have been involved with the Heifer Project, and have challenged our Sunday school classes too "adopt a Heifer" also. We financially support a young woman who ministers to youth on college campuses. We provide a 'birthday party' for the residents of Villa Rose each quarter, giving them a birthday cake, a balloon, and a goodie bag filled with items they can use while a resident there.
Our Janette Smith Celebration Circle prepared shoeboxes for the Women's Abused Shelter in Warner Robins during the early spring months. Shoeboxes contained school supplies and toys for the children. A project also taken on by the women of this circle was to provide dinners to members of the Ronald McDonald House in Macon once a month. With the disbandment of this circle, the ladies of the Sunshine Circle have taken on this task.
We have joint Easter and Thanksgiving Services with our neighboring churches, furnishing food when the service is at our church. In the past, twice a year Allen Temple and our church had services together with what they used to call "dinner on the ground."
We prepare goodies bags at Christmas time for the shut-ins, visit with them and send cards.
The list could go on and on but you can see by what we have listed that we are indeed an active group who enjoys doing what we do because we are the hands and feet of our Lord Jesus.
One of our projects has been to sell church plates with a beautiful picture of the church, painted by Frances Moseley, one of our members. The plates cost $15.00 each. You can contact the church office if you wish to buy one.
If you are new to our area and would like to come and visit with us, we welcome you.
God Bless You
